Floating is a cross-genre, transdisciplinary phenomenon. On the one hand it is a rational and physical fact, on the other hand a parapsychological wishful projection. It is generally recognized that during the state of floating the laws of gravity are defied, but in contrast to flying directed movement is not possible in this state. Thus floating seems to be random and remains random, almost happening without any intervention. In nature you have the floating of the clouds, aerosols, airborne particles and sediments, there are hovering insects like syrphid flies and birds like hummingbirds. In physics there are acoustic, optical and magnetic floating states, called levitations. In the transportation systems there are hovercraft boats or transrapid trains, there are floating speakers, sneakers, display systems, beds and sofas.

But there is also metaphysical floating. The stories of levitating persons like saints and magicians, yogis and shamans are numerous. There were and still are seances with floating objects, photographies and films of floating people in our days as well as illusionists and occultists.

Art forms like classical and modern art, action art and sculpture, poetry and prose, motion pictures and animated cartoons, science fiction, architecture and product design have dealt with floating in many ways.

All of us are fascinated by this property or ability to overcome gravity. In this respect floating oscillates between dream and delusion, hubris and heresy, precision and illusion. In the state of floating the fields of meaning of physics and psyche are overlapping. The fact that we are able to influence physical aspects and conditions mentally contradicts real experience. Yet, there has always been the desire to do so, from the ancient sophisticated cultures until today. We want to participate in a form of existence transcending our normal lives - or are at least led to believe in it in the form of an illusion.

The exhibition "Floating - Between Illusion and Precision" is due to the suggestion of the Frankfurt cultural scientist Volker Fischer, who has also been the curator.
